Rolex Submariner 5513 Gilt Dial

Launched in 1953, the Submariner line is one of - if not the single most important timepiece designs in all of wristwatch history. An icon among icons, its signature Oyster case, rotating dive-timing bezel and simple three-hand black dial configuration with perfect proportions is for many the singular most identifiable wristwatch in the world.  Introduced in the early 1960s, the Reference 5513 is easily the most recognizable Reference in the spread. At once handsome and capable, the earliest executions in the series are sought after by collectors for their historical significance and beauty. Spawning a number of variations (and innumerable knockoffs), the early no-date models are some of the most collectible diving watches on the market, discernible from later versions by their gilt dials and PCG (Pointed Crown Guard) Oyster Cases. This particular example carries the serial number of 765007, dating it to the first run of models in '62/'63 and giving it a fun connection to a well-known member of MI6 (who of course also wore a Rolex Sub in his early adventures). In beautifully patinated condition, this piece features a tremendously crisp and sharp PCG case paired with a stunning aged "Silver Depth" Meters-First dial and nicely patinated handset.  Including a genuine C&I Rivet Oyster Bracelet (dated 1971), this may be the ultimate expression of the most popular model of the Submariner, making for a tremendous addition to any collection.  While 'normal' 5513 Subs are commonly found on today's vintage market, gilt dial examples are exceedingly hard to turn up in any condition, but examples of this caliber are downright scarce.
