Why We Love It
The Rolex Submariner is a classic, and there’s good reason why almost every collector winds up with a vintage Rolex diver in their stash - these are timeless, tough, do-anything, go-anywhere tool watches.
Dating to roughly 1969, this Reference 5513 epitomizes the perfect combination of features that define its iconic stature - a 39mm Oyster case with a matte black 'meters first' dial, fat-font bezel insert with a lightly ghosted coloration, and a period-correct riveted Oyster bracelet.
Featuring a strong, thick case with defined beveling and a lovely patina throughout, this is a great example at a compelling price point - don't miss it!
The Story
The Reference 5513 is arguably one of the most desirable examples of Submariner out there. Produced from 1962 until 1989, the Reference 5513 is probably the longest-running model of Rolex ever. Following on the heels of the 5512, the 5513 was the second reference of Sub to feature crown guards.
However, due to the 5512’s relative rarity on the collector’s circuit, it’s the 5513 that has come to typify vintage no-date Subs in the minds of collectors.
Long viewed by collectors as the purest expression of Submariner, the 5513 is the last great no-date Sub. Although Rolex still makes Submariners without dates, the 5513 retains the smaller diameter (39mm) case and slimmer proportions that distinguish vintage Submariners from modern.
