If you know chronographs, you know Minerva.
Long before heritage became a marketing strategy, Minerva was producing some of the most beautifully engineered chronograph movements in Switzerland. The Calibre 13-20 (often referred to within the 20CH family) remains one of the great manual-wind chronograph calibres of the mid-20th century — column-wheel controlled, elegantly laid out, and finished with a level of care that rewards a loupe.
This rare yellow gold reference dates to the 1950s and represents a fascinating transitional moment in chronograph design. Housed in a substantial three-piece snap-back case — bezel, mid-case, and caseback — it reflects early efforts to introduce water-resistant construction to serious timing instruments. The case has real presence, with oversized proportions and fixed integrated lugs that underscore its utilitarian intent.
The silvered dial is pure mid-century clarity: bold printed black Roman numerals, outer seconds chronograph scales, and twin subsidiary registers for running seconds and a 30-minute counter. Blued steel leaf hands provide just enough contrast against the dial’s restrained palette.
At approximately 35mm, it wears with authority yet retains unmistakable vintage proportions and charm. Powered by a manually wound chronograph movement, this is Minerva at its most honest — mechanical, purposeful, and built for those who appreciate chronograph architecture over branding.
A connoisseur’s chronograph in oversized steel.
