3… 2… 1… Liftoff! Take a poll amongst wristwatch collectors, and we'd bet the consensus would be that there might be nothing more important or iconic in a watch collection than an Omega Speedmaster. Sure, chronographs such as the Rolex Daytona or the Heuer Carrera are classics — icons even, but neither can match the stature of the Speedy with regards to importance in history. In fact, arguably no watch can. This is no common Speedmaster, however. Released in the 2010s to celebrate the original Speedy released in 1957, this Omega Speedmaster '57 utilizes the classic two register display less commonly associated with the collection in the modern era. This example is housed in a 41.5mm ‘twisted lug’ stainless steel case with a sapphire crystal, a signed crown, dual ‘barrel’ pushers, and a stainless fixed bezel. It features a beautiful, satin white dial with applied, rosy surrounds along the indices and hands. This watch essentially takes the aesthetics of the classic Speedmaster and modernizes them. We get a larger case format, reliable Coaxial movement within, sapphire crystals, and modern milling techniques. And yet, from a historical standpoint, this watch looks like its progenitor. Paired to a leather strap with a push-button deployant clasp and accompanied by its factory goodies, this Speedmaster Chronoscope constitutes one of Omega’s most exciting releases in years. Functional and fantastic. We love it.
