Why We Love It Not all Oysters are this sweet. With perfect portions, timeless styling, and a plethora of dial options, the Oyster Precision is, quite simply, one of the most versatile dress watches Rolex ever produced. Differing internally from their 'Perpetual' cousins, the Precision line features a manually-wound movement, something that no longer exists in the Rolex Oyster line, but that we absolutely love. Not only do these wonderful watches retain the classic waterproof Oyster case design, but they have an added connectivity for the wearer, owing to their hand-cranked movements. This particular model, a Reference 6424, features an oversized 36mm case and dates from approximately 1964. Its silver sunburst dial is virtually flawless and retains perfectly aged luminous plots and applied dart markers. Paired up with a flawless and evenly patinated 'Alpha' handset, this watch is a stunning, elegant counterpart to the austerity of the manufacture’s sports watches. What no one tells you about the Precision line is how THIN they are, making them absolutely brilliant to wear, particularly when used as a timepiece for formal occasions. Another added bonus to the Reference 6424 are its 20mm lugs, which make strap changes a breeze, further adding to the versatility of this excellent watch. The Story Despite the success of Rolex’s sports models, they were not the manufacture’s sole focus of production. Throughout the 20th century, Rolex released dress watches with elegant dials housed in the famous Oyster case. At a lower price point, they stood outside the Crown’s more elite dress watches such as the Datejust or the Day-Date. Known as the Oyster Precision line, they served as an entry point for consumers into the world of Rolex. Simple, elegant, yet no less sturdy than their sporty counterparts, they remain just as handsome today as they were when they were created.
