The pre-owned watch price gap
We compared 94,488 live listings across hundreds of sellers. The same pre-owned watch model routinely varies by a median 24% from the cheapest to the most expensive seller — a typical $946 difference on the identical reference. Here is what the numbers show, and how to use them.
One watch, many prices
There is no single "market price" for a used watch — there is a range, and it is wider than most buyers expect. When we line up every seller offering the same reference, the gap between the lowest and highest asking price has a median of 24%. The middle half of comparable models spread between 8% and 66%. In dollar terms the typical gap is $946 — and on five-figure watches it runs into the thousands.
Put plainly: buy the same watch from the wrong seller and you can pay a fifth more for nothing. The single most valuable thing you can do before purchasing is compare the exact reference across every seller who has one in stock.
The gap in the wild

What a watch costs, by brand

Why the same watch varies so much
Several forces pull identical references apart on price:
- Condition and completeness. An unworn "full set" with box and papers commands a real premium over a watch-only example with wear — even when the reference is identical.
- Seller type and overhead. A brick-and-mortar boutique with staff, warranty, and service carries costs an online-only dealer doesn't, and prices accordingly.
- Listing age and motivation. A watch that has sat unsold for months is often priced to move; a fresh, in-demand arrival is priced with confidence.
- Region and currency. Prices set in different currencies and markets don't converge instantly, so cross-border gaps persist.
- Simple discretion. Absent a central price, sellers anchor to what they paid and what they think the watch is worth — which is not always what the market says.

The takeaway isn't that watches are overpriced — it's that one seller's number is not the price. Before you buy, pull up every seller with the same reference in stock, look at the full range, and judge where a given listing sits. A price near the bottom of the range with good condition and a full set is a strong buy; one near the top needs a reason. Methodology
Based on 94,488 live listings covering 46,708 distinct models from nearly 598 brands, aggregated from established Shopify, WooCommerce, Squarespace and eBay sellers (snapshot: August 2026). Listings are grouped into one model by brand and extracted reference number, so every comparison is like-for-like. Prices are normalized to USD; clear statistical outliers and non-watch items are excluded. The price-gap figures cover the 4,624 models offered in stock by more than one seller; "spread" is the difference between the lowest and highest asking price for a model, reported as a median across models.
