Cartier has spent more than a century proving that true style isn't about reinvention—it's about refinement.
Few watches illustrate that better than the Tank. Introduced in 1917 and inspired by the aerial view of military tanks crossing the battlefields of the First World War, the design has become one of the most enduring icons in both watchmaking and fashion. From artists and actors to royalty and tastemakers, generations have found their way to the Tank's perfectly balanced geometry.
This particular example belongs to the celebrated Must de Cartier collection, a line introduced in the 1970s that brought Cartier's legendary design language to a broader audience without sacrificing any of its charm. And among Must models, few are as striking as the monochromatic dial variants.
Here, a rich burgundy-red lacquer dial transforms the familiar Tank into something altogether more expressive. Free from 'Roman' numerals, minute tracks, or superfluous decoration, the dial becomes a field of uninterrupted color, framed by the watch's elegant rectangular case. Depending on the light, the surface shifts from deep oxblood to vibrant crimson, giving the watch a warmth and personality rarely found in traditional dress watches.
Completing the design is Cartier's signature sapphire cabochon crown and, perhaps most notably, a manually wound mechanical movement—a feature found on only a small percentage of Must de Cartier Tanks and one increasingly sought after by collectors today. The Must line was born during a transformative period for Cartier, when the maison sought to create a more accessible collection while retaining the elegance that made its name. By using gold vermeil cases rather than solid gold and often fitting quartz movements, Cartier successfully introduced a new generation to the Tank. This example, however, offers something a little more special: the soul of a traditional mechanical watch wrapped in one of Cartier's most charismatic dial colors.
Whether paired with denim, tailoring, or eveningwear, the Tank remains one of the few watches that feels completely at home in every setting. Few watches prove more convincingly that sometimes color is the complication.
