There’s nothing more classic and appealing than a simple dress watch.
Though to be fair, when we say ‘simple’, we mean ‘uncomplicated’ — not unattractive! The 20th century saw a plethora of such watches hit the market. Generally available on leather straps and featuring two or three hands, these reliable wristwatches kept time during the classiest decades of the past 100 years. However, some were more innovative than others.
This fascinating piece from Swiss-founded watchmaker Mathey-Tissot is one such watch. Housed in a 27mm octagonal chrome case with a yellow gold-tone crown and matching yellow gold-tone rounded-rectangle bezel with four steel screws, it features a silvered dial with horizontal striping, simple 'riveted' cardinal indices, and a gold-tone 'dauphine' handset.
Paired to a matching two-tone multi-link bracelet with a signed clasp and powered by a Japanese quartz movement, it presents an excellent opportunity to cop a bit of the '70s Piaget feel at a distinctly affordable price point.
