Rolex Submariner 5513

Why We Love It The reference 5513 is, for many collectors and enthusiasts, the Submariner to own. Compared to the 1680, the 5513 does not have a date window, which is a shared  design language characteristic of the early models.   Fitted within *arguably* perfect sized 39mm Oyster case is a matte black 'meters first' dial. Dating to roughly 1967, this example shows thick creamy lume plots with a 'Mercedes' handset showing matching tritium - its bezel, just beginning to show that ghosty charcoal fade.  While the word 'iconic' is wildly overused these days - the Submariner deserves the moniker more than any other. Fitted on a rivet bracelet with a big logo clasp, this 5513 is a serious example for any Submariner collector.  The Story The Reference 5513 is arguably one of the most desirable examples of Submariner out there. Produced from 1962 until 1989, the Reference 5513 is probably the longest-running model of Rolex ever. Following on the heels of the 5512, the 5513 was the second reference of Sub to feature crown guards. However, due to the 5512’s relative rarity on the collector’s circuit, it’s the 5513 that has come to typify vintage no-date Subs in the minds of collectors. Long viewed by collectors as the purest expression of Submariner, the 5513 is the last great no-date Sub. Although Rolex still makes Submariners without dates, the 5513 retains the smaller diameter (39mm) case and slimmer proportions that distinguish vintage Submariners from modern.
