The Carrera was one of Jack Heuer’s most passionate projects, and his design ethos for this watch can be summed up in one word: legibility. Jack wanted a watch that was stylish and functional — one that gives you everything you need and nothing you don’t. For a timepiece designed in the late 1960s, the Carrera remains a stunner, proving the brilliance of Jack’s design philosophy. A clean dial never goes out of style, and it makes the Carrera an easy watch to dress up or down. At 36mm, the case wears extremely well on the modern wrist, its long beveled lugs making it feel a bit beefier while still slipping easily under a cuff. This particular model, a Reference 3147S, is notable for its inclusion of a date window at 12 o'clock. A smooth bezel and an acrylic crystal give way to a simple silvered dial with an outer 1/5th-seconds track in black, while applied 'baton' indices help maintain the model's famed legibility. Recessed 45-minute and running seconds registers provide balance, while a luminous 'baton' handset indicates the time. With intact tritium plots, a screw-down caseback, and no signs of polishing, this example is in excellent, honest condition. Powered by the hand-wound Landeron Calibre 89 movement and paired to a taupe leather strap with white top-stitching and a stainless steel pin buckle, the Carrera 'Dato 45' is ready for its close-up.
