A perpetual calendar is like a small computer on your wrist.
Think of it this way: Imagine a watch that keeps track of not only the time, but also the date, the day of the week, and the month, tells you whether it’s a leap year or not, and what the current phase of the moon is. Oh, and one more thing — imagine it does all of this mechanically, using springs and gears, and that you only have to adjust it once every century or so. Crazy, right?
Patek has been making such watches since the Second World War, and continues to make some of the most superlative quantieme perpetuelles on the market. This particular example, a Reference 5236P, dates to 2022, and includes a neat in line perpetual display that stands out from the rest.
Inspired by pocket watches from the Patek archive and the coveted 3448, the 5236 is one of the simplest and most legible perpetual calendars thanks to its in-line display, only showing the information you need to know, instead of displaying the perpetual calendar indications in sub-registers like more traditional wristwatches today. Measuring 41mm in platinum, it features a smooth bezel, a signed crown, a sapphire crystal, and a lovely blue dial with a vertical grain boasting in-line day, date, and month displays; a sub-seconds/moon phase display at 6 o'clock; day/night and leap year indicators; an outer 'railroad' minute track; and a 'sword' handset and matching applied indices.
With its lovely design, interesting dial configuration, and excellent workmanship, this Patek Philippe ‘QP’ is simply a tremendous timepiece — the type that any watch collector would be proud to feature in their collection!
