Seiko’s original 6106-8100 kicked off what has become one of the richest, most addictive sub-genres in vintage collecting: the light sport diver. For collectors, these watches sit near the top of the wish list—and as availability keeps shrinking, they’ve started to feel less like “great Seikos” and more like genuinely important vintage divers. This chevron-dial example is part of that story. It’s closely related to the follow-up 8589 and shares DNA with the famous 6119-8460 worn by NASA flight director Gene Kranz during the Apollo era. Same general case language, same no-nonsense intent—just with a dial that’s far more expressive. And that dial is the reason you’re here: a bright cobalt/electric blue with a sunburst finish and glossy lacquered depth, fitted with the model’s signature split 'chevron' luminous hour markers. The hands are bold, polished 'batons' with matching lume, and a slender sweep seconds hand keeps the whole layout crisp and legible. The 38mm stainless steel case has that sloping barrel profile Seiko did so well, with chunky lugs and a grippy rotating bezel. The caseback engraving remains clear, including “SEIKO STAINLESS STEEL 6106-8100.” Inside, the hacking Cal. 6106B delivers exactly what you want: rugged, reliable, and equipped with quick-setting for day and date (this example with a Spanish day wheel). The crown sits at 4 o’clock, as any proper Seiko sport diver should. Fitted here to a black pass-through strap, this is a rare and historically loaded Seiko that still wears like a daily driver. One you’ll reach for again and again.
