One name: Jaeger-LeCoultre. The watchmaker’s watchmaker — and one of the most quietly influential brands of the 20th century.
Among JLC’s many midcentury hits, the PowerMatic (also known as the “Powerwind”) stands out as a genuinely forward-thinking dress watch. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, the idea of combining an automatic movement with a power-reserve display was still novel territory. JLC, as usual, got there early — and did it with taste.
This particular example is the most popular mid-sized model measuring 33.5mm in diameter. Rendered in stainless steel, it has that perfect midcentury presence: slim, elegant, and confident on the wrist without feeling oversized. The dial is a beautifully patinated champagne tone, framed by a clean, restrained layout with sharp 'dagger' indices that lets the design breathe.
At 12 o’clock is the watch’s calling card: a power-reserve display shown through an aperture with a red-and-white disc, marked from 0 to 40 hours, with the first portion highlighted in red. It’s functional, yes — but it’s also graphic, playful, and oddly modern.
Inside beats a Jaeger-LeCoultre automatic movement that powers both the time display and the complication with the brand’s signature reliability. The watch retains its original 'dauphine' hands and crown, and is topped with a period-correct plexiglass crystal.
If you’re hunting for a vintage dress watch that feels smart, this is one of JLC's best answers.
This spectacular piece comes from the collection of Zaf Basha, a noted authority on Jaeger-LeCoultre who has published two books: Vintage Military Watches: A Guide for the Collector and Jaeger-LeCoultre: The Ultimate Guide for the Collector. Over the years, Basha put together one of the most impressive assemblages of vintage JLC timepieces in the world, and we're thrilled and honor to offer many of them for sale on Analog:Shift.
