Most of the time, our passion runs to classic, iconic vintage design. Occasionally we find something modern and alluring that captures our attention. But rarely, if ever, do we stumble across a timepiece that blends classic and modern elements in such a harmonious way- especially one that came before its time, and no yet recognized by the consumer market.
The Patek Philippe reference 6000 is one of those pieces, in our mind. Mixing classic Calatrava design and dress watch proportions with a crisp, modern, sporty dial layout, the 6000 is a piece that really hasn't caught on with collectors yet - and in our eyes, that makes it all the more interesting!
Adding to the allure of this already unusual piece is the functionality of date calendar, set around the dial in an outer ring and set by positioning (via micropusher) a red half-moon date hand. With subsidiary seconds offset between 4 and 5, the dial of the Ref. 6000 is a sight to behold, and has a lot going on for such a classically sized wristwatch. On the underside of the case, the Calibre 240 automatic movement with microrotor (with engraved Calatrava Cross) can be seen dancing away with the refinement and accuracy you'd expect from the most respected brand in the business.
This particular example comes from the personal collection of a passionate collector in New York City, and has been worn and maintained with love in all his years of ownership. Clad in white gold, the case does show some light markings, which could easily be cleaned up with a professional polishing job. The prior owner opted not to do so to keep the originality pure, but it has been serviced and maintained regularly.
It may be some time until the Reference 6000 is fully understood by the greater collector community, but in our minds it is one of the most enticing models to come from the hallowed halls of Patek Philippe in the past decade. With crisp, classic case design, a sharp dial with asymmetrical layout and calendar function, and a high grade movement, the 6000 has all of the elements of a contemporary classic from a transitional age in modern timepiece design. We wouldn't be surprised to see these models ultimately explode in popularity down the road. For now, they are just awesome timepieces to wear and enjoy. Consider yourselves notified.
