Branding can be everything in vintage watch collecting, which is exactly why this 1958 LeCoultre chronograph is so charming. The name “LeCoultre” on the dial doesn’t indicate a different company or a lesser watch. Quite the opposite. It signals that this piece was produced specifically for the U.S. market — a subtle detail that gives it an added layer of midcentury Americana without losing an ounce of Swiss credibility.
This is a Master Mariner triple-register chronograph, housed in a 35.5mm stainless steel case that hits the sweet spot between sporty and refined. The case is clean, sharp, and purposeful, with classic round pushers flanking the crown. The dial is where the personality really comes through: a crisp silver base with three perfectly balanced registers for 30 minutes, 12 hours, and running seconds, plus a vivid blue tachymeter scale tracing the outer edge. It’s the kind of detail that makes the whole watch feel faster, cooler, and more “of its era,” like something worn behind the wheel of a roadster with the windows down.
Powering the watch is the legendary Valjoux 72, hand-wound and engraved LeCoultre, one of the most celebrated chronograph calibers of the 20th century. Finished with 'dauphine' hands and a beautifully proportioned layout, this reference E355 is the kind of chronograph that quietly checks every box without screaming for attention.
Specifications-wise, it measures 35.5mm in diameter with an 18mm lug width, and it represents everything we love about 1950s chronographs: mechanical honesty, symmetry, and effortless style.
This spectacular piece comes from the collection of Zaf Basha, a noted authority on Jaeger-LeCoultre who has published two books: Vintage Military Watches: A Guide for the Collector and Jaeger-LeCoultre: The Ultimate Guide for the Collector. Over the years, Basha put together one of the most impressive assemblages of vintage JLC timepieces in the world, and we're thrilled and honor to offer many of them for sale on Analog:Shift.
