Rolex Submariner Date

Why We Love It The Rolex Submariner is perhaps the most essential watch in a vintage watch enthusiast's collection. While non-date models such as the 5513 hog most of the attention, we find added convenience from a date function, and are enthusiastic about the value proposition early Reference 1680 'Date Subs' represent. This particular example not only brings that into stark relief, but offers a tremendous amount of character to boot! First things first, let's address the patina. The untouched handset has developed a rich, dark patina - something many would change out, but we chose to leave it as found - after all, they help tell its story! Just as satisfying are the beautifully yellowed luminescent indices against the flawless black matte dial - just lovely.  Worthy of further note is the fact that the date wheel is not white. It's silver. The earliest 1680s had silver date wheels, and while those serviced by Rolex were replaced with a white date wheel, this one retains its correct part. To know that the watch is untouched is reassuring for those concerned with originality. Fitted with a domed, non-magnified acrylic crystal, MK III bezel insert, color-matched genuine pip, and a solid link 78360 Oyster bracelet with Flip-Lock clasp, this is an excellent example for the Sub enthusiast who wants to wear and enjoy their iconic sports diver - not just leave it in a display case gathering dust! The Story The Reference 1680, released in 1966, deviated from previous iterations of the Submariner--such as the beloved ref. 5513--by including a date function. This change was remarkably divisive because, according the diehards, if you need to know the date while on a dive, you're kind of screwed. Despite the divided opinions on the added functionality, it ticks all the boxes for a tool watch. A sturdy stainless steel case? Check. Robust movement that is dust-proof, shock-proof, and waterproof? Check, check, and check.
