The Islander Calverton was designed as a replacement for the discontinued Seiko Flightmaster, paying tribute to the "Mighty Flighty" while folding in the upgrades Islander is known for. It's a sporty flight chronograph loaded with features that are useful in daily wear — a rotating slide rule, a genuine audible alarm, and 200 meters of water resistance in a case built for the cockpit.
The case is 41.8mm stainless steel, 12.9mm thick, with a 48mm lug-to-lug, and both the crown and chronograph pushers screw down tight — a detail rarely found on chronographs at this price and key to the watch's 200m rating. A bi-directional friction bezel doubles as a functioning rotary slide rule, useful for speed and distance calculations or splitting a dinner bill. The dial is protected by a double-domed sapphire crystal with inner anti-reflective coating, and the watch is fitted to a solid-link, solid-endlink bracelet secured with screws, tapering from 20mm to 18mm at a milled scissor micro-adjust clasp. The caseback is solid and embossed with an F-14 Tomcat.
Power comes from the Seiko Epson YM62A quartz movement, which combines a 60-minute chronograph — tracked via a sweeping center seconds hand and a minutes subdial at 12:00 — with a genuinely useful audible alarm. The left subdial runs continuous seconds, while the subdial at 6:00 displays and sets the alarm, which can be armed twice a day and rings for 20 seconds or until silenced with a button press. An end-of-life indicator ticks the seconds hand in two-second jumps when the SR927W battery needs replacing.
