It’s fairly safe to say that in this day and age, Jaeger-LeCoultre doesn’t always get the recognition it deserves. That’s not to say the manufacture isn’t held in high regard — it is. But the level of innovation, craftsmanship, and design that JLC has demonstrated over its existence simply cannot be overstated. This is, after all, the maison that gave the world the Reverso, the Memovox, the Deep Sea Alarm, the Geophysic, and the legendary Mark XI — a catalog that reads like a greatest-hits album of 20th-century watchmaking. This Ref. 2721 Triple Date is the perfect example of what happens when horological tradition and innovation combine. Triple calendars hold a special place in the minds of many collectors because they’re one of the rare complications that feel both useful and tasteful. In their most classic layout, they display the day and month in clean apertures, with the date traced along the circumference and indicated by a central red-tipped pointer hand — a format that naturally allows for symmetry, balance, and legibility. And that’s the magic here: this watch manages to present an entire arsenal of information clearly and beautifully, all within an oversized-for-the-era 36mm case. Executed in 18k yellow gold, this example wears with real presence thanks to its elegant proportions and teardrop-style lugs, measuring approximately 45mm lug-to-lug. The dial is the main event: a luminous gold tone that feels impossibly modern for a 1940s calendar watch, shifting between warm gold, and champagne depending on the light. It’s finished with applied hour markers, dauphine hands, a small seconds register, and a red-tipped pointer date hand, giving the entire composition a subtle sense of motion. It’s fitted to a brown lizard leather strap, which plays beautifully against the warmth of the case and dial — tailored, rich, and quietly confident. Powering the watch is Jaeger-LeCoultre’s manual-winding Caliber P484, a 15-jeweled movement that underscores why JLC has always been a true manufacture: not merely assembling great watches, but engineering them from the inside out. In terms of elegant design and horological prowess, this is a piece that punches way above its weight class — then smiles politely while doing it. Since its inception, Jaeger-LeCoultre has produced timepieces that are both timeless and perpetually appealing. This exceptionally handsome Triple Calendar nails that point in spectacular fashion. This spectacular piece comes from the collection of Zaf Basha, a noted authority on Jaeger-LeCoultre who has published two books: Vintage Military Watches: A Guide for the Collector and Jaeger-LeCoultre: The Ultimate Guide for the Collector. Over the years, Basha put together one of the most impressive assemblages of vintage JLC timepieces in the world, and we're thrilled and honor to offer many of them for sale on Analog:Shift.
