The annual calendar is a complication invented by Patek Philippe.
While it plays second fiddle to the perpetual calendar in the minds of most collectors, the reality is that the construction of this calendar mechanism is equally challenging, and in some cases, requires even more components.
The Reference 5035 was Patek's first Annual Calendar model launched in 1996, and set the bar for all that followed – including those from competitors. This particular model, the Reference 5146G-010, was initially launched in 2005 and, much like the Reference 5036, adds a moon phase display to the mix. Housed in a 39mm white gold case, it features no shortage of refined details — a domed sapphire crystal, a sunken, signed crown, and recessed pusher correctors all amount to a sleek watch that’s low in profile and accommodates a wide range of wrist sizes.
The metallic ruthenium dial features a set of subsidiary displays for the day and month; a moon phase displayed through a crescent-style aperture; a date display at 6 o’clock; a power reserve display at 12 o’clock; polished, applied markers; a matching feuille handset; and an outer ‘railroad’ minute track. Balance is the key here: the 3, 9, and 12 Arabic numeral indices and aforementioned ‘railroad’ minute track coexist with the more refined nature of the moon phase and annual calendar display in a cohesive whole that smacks of both utility and luxury.
This Reference 5146G-010 houses Patek’s Calibre 324 automatic-winding movement — an updated version of the Calibre 315, it features beautiful finishing details all around, including an engine-turned center on the signed rotor, circular and linear Côtes de Genève along the baseplate, and polished screw countersinks.
There’s something to be said about a versatile, everyday watch that won’t look out of place with a suit at the office or with jeans and t-shirt while running weekend errands. And with surprisingly good lume, this Patek Philippe Reference 5146G-010 blends both dressy and sporty elements perfectly.
But don't take our word for it — come try it on for size!
