For over six decades the Rolex Submariner has weathered the changing tides of popular tastes.
Born as a tool watch beloved by everyone from fictional spies to real life undersea explorers and desk divers alike, it has metamorphosed over the years into something truly iconic. Without hyperbole, it is Rolex’s most popular watch - and arguably the most popular watch in the world.
Throughout the years, the Submariner has slowly been refined with small changes and tweaks every few years - and "larger" updates every few decades or so... Case size, fonts, luminescent materials, and bracelet variations all have been fairly commonplace and expected. In terms of color variation, however, the Submariner had always been relatively staid when compared to Rolex’s other watches. After all, a tool watch doesn’t need to be pretty, it just needs to do its job.
The watch that we have here is the successor to the recently discontinued 40mm 'Maxi' cased Submariners, featuring a slightly wider 'Maxi' case coming in at 41mm, and slightly slimmed-down lugs with a 21mm spacing. The result is a piece that wears virtually identical to the previous 40mm case.
This particular watch, a Reference 126610LV ('v' for verte) is the latest in the lineage of green-bezeled Submariners; following the Reference 16610LV introduced in 2003 and the Reference 116610LV from the 2010s.
It features a unidirectional rotating dive timing bezel with a green ceramic insert, a luminous glossy black dial, a signed triplock crown, and Rolex's excellent Oyster bracelet with a Glidelock clasp.
While not for everyone, this watch offers a bit of added flair than a "run-of-the-mill" Submariner and has very much become a desirable modern Reference.
Call it what you want - the 'Cermit' or the 'Starbucks' - either way, when a watch is given a nickname that sticks, well... you know.
