One name: Gerald Genta.
The Audemars Piguet Royal Oak is perhaps Genta’s most memorable work, and in many ways changed the shape of the watch industry.
The Royal Oak essentially created an entirely new category of 'luxury sport' timepieces, and with it came a new design language which inspired countless other manufactures. What's particularly delightful about the design of the Royal Oak is that it works brilliantly in a number of sizes and casing materials, from steel to carbon fiber or solid gold.
What we have here is an incredible iteration of the 'Jumbo': a Reference 16202XT.OO.1240XT.01 'extra-thin.'
It features a 39mm titanium case with the undoubtedly iconic integrated bracelet, an incredible burgundy smoked dial with applied, luminous indices, an applied "AP" logo at 6 o'clock (bonus points for us), a matching handset, and Audemars Piguet's Calibre 7121 automatic-winding movement beating away within. The bezel and center links are executed in Bulk Metallic Glass, or BMG.
A traditional Royal Oak, whether vintage or modern, is a fantastic piece on its own. However this Reference, with its titanium-BMG build and smokey-burgundy dial, in our opinion, turns the dial to 11.
Try it on the wrist once, and you'll have a tough time taking it off...
Don't say we didn't warn you!
