Patek Philippe has long been known for its complicated watchmaking, but following the stock market crash of 1929, fewer clients had the means to purchase their higher-end models. After securing a controlling interest in the firm, Jean and Charles Henri Stern decided to enlist the help of an English designer named David Penney to create a simple watch that would come in at a lower price point and appeal to the firm’s clientele.  Using the principles espoused by the Bauhaus school and its minimalist, function-first philosophy, Penney conceived the Calatrava, taking its name from the Spanish military order established in the 12th century whose emblem - a Greek cross with fleur-de-lis ends - had become the symbol of Patek Philippe. Since its debut in 1932, the Calatrava line has become industry shorthand for a simple, elegant dress watch — even from brands other than Patek itself. This particular Calatrava, a Reference 3445/100, is a later production variant of the model, housed in a 35mm 18k yellow gold case with a sapphire crystal, signed crown, and a polished bezel. It features a stunning non-luminous silver sunburst dial with applied gold sitck indices, a framed date window at 3:00, and matching handset. Powered by Patek Philippe's self-winding Calibre 27-460M, the Reference 3445 was introduced in 1961 and saw production through the early 1980s. It was the first Calatrava with a date function to feature an automatic movement and a waterproof case, giving it historical significance as well as a sturdier construction than other models, resulting in a watch that has wrist presence and modern-day wearability. This example dates to the early 1970s and remains in truly outstanding condition throughout. Delightfully, it also features a personal engraving, on its caseback - “E.C.O to M.T.O. 2-3-62”  - and is fitted to our in-house Montserrat suede leather strap. You could get yourself a modern dress watch that tells the time just fine. But this piece - a real Calatrava from the world’s greatest watchmaker - will help you experience the passage of time with the charm, character, and story that only a vintage watch can deliver!
