The Humboldt ExP-02

We’re excited to introduce the second watch in our Experimental Series, the Humboldt ExP-02! Horology is a bit of both art and mad science, and our Experimental Series is all about the “mad science” part. For this limited production Humboldt, we’re pushing the limits of our in-house production. We produced both the dials and bezels ourselves to create a sleek, capable tool watch with a refined, monochromatic design that showcases our commitment to craftsmanship. Laser light is used to cut the dials before they’re sandblasted to achieve a stunning matte grey finish. Each dial is then marked with a “ghost script” that shines or vanishes depending on the light. The watches are fitted with a fixed steel bezel machined right in our Chicago HQ on our trusty shop lathe. The intensive, hands-on production process results in watches that are as singular as the individuals who wear them. Learn more about the Humboldt ExP-02 Overview The Experimental Series is a line of watches that allows us to explore different techniques and expand our horological chops. That can mean new metals, heat treatments, unique dial materials—nothing is off limits. This is the second watch in the series, and with it, we’re pushing the boundaries of our in-house production capabilities even further.  While the first ExP model was forged in fire, this one is cut by light itself. This one-of-a-kind Humboldt features a unique grey dial that sets it apart in the Oak & Oscar collection. Each dial is machined in our Chicago HQ using our very own 100 watt MOPA fiber laser. The chapter ring, hour markers, hand holes, and positioning holes are all cut with powerful laser pulses. The dials are then sandblasted and marked with laser light resulting in a “ghost script” that shines or vanishes depending on the light. The Humboldt ExP-02 features a fixed steel bezel that is machined by our watchmaker on a Schaublin 70 lathe. Each bezel is precisely bored to fit perfectly onto the watch case. The handcraft involved in producing the Humboldt ExP-02 means that it’s a limited production piece. We’ll make more in the future; these watches just take more time to produce than our regular production models. The Humboldt ExP-02 is presented on our precision-designed, tapered (20mm-16mm), brushed stainless steel bracelet with solid, fully articulated links. A secondary orange nylon strap comes with the watch that makes for a really sharp contrast that’s sure to turn some heads. The initial run of the Humboldt ExP-02 was limited to just twenty examples. Ten watches were reserved exclusively for Owners, and ten were reserved for the general public. Each set was made available through a lottery system.
